Friends' Day Trips

Kansas City Day Trip sponsored by the Morgan County Friends of The Library.

March 26 (Tuesday):  “Visits to the National Frontier Trails Museum AND the World War One Museum”!

Don’t miss seeing these two internationally famous  museums  featured on this exciting trip!  People travel to Kansas City from nearly every country on earth to see them!  We are fortunate they are both practically in our backyards!

National Frontier Trails Museum

We’ll first stop at the National Frontier Trails Museum in Independence where we’ll enjoy the excellent, new film on the history of the great trails that took many of our ancestors west.  It is interesting to note that ruts from the Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, etc. passed by this museum.  The exhibits here are outstanding and have many stories to tell!  In addition, the gift shop is filled with many books, pictures, and items relating to the frontier trails.  Our delicious, hot catered luncheon buffet will be included here, too.

National WW1 Museum

Following our included luncheon we’ll travel to the National WW I Museum.  Here you’ll find displays of outstanding artifacts and interactive displays that include everything from posters, battle maps, photographs, archival films, vintage audio broadcasts, artillery, weaponry, cannons, caissons, a  Harley-Davidson army  motorcycle, a tank, a simulated and very realistic World War 1 trench and much, much more!  You are welcome to also select and listen to music and speeches of the era in private audio listening rooms!

Our excellent veteran museum guide will be with us to answer questions and explain about the exhibits.  You’ll find that the gift shop is well supplied with WW 1 books, pictures and other items.  Even if you have been here before, note that the museum is continually receiving new donated items so that the exhibits are always being updated.  Many are very rare and valuable.

As a special treat we have also included admission to the exhibit of art featuring WW 1 events.  It is outstanding.  A new exhibit you’ll see has just been added and is called “Fabric Art of WW I.”  Servicemen would often draw and color on pieces of fabric such as cotton wool or silk and sometimes on pieces of parachutes.  Their art depicted scenes and sentiments of being in the war.  They are quite moving and many were mailed home to their families.

We’ll also listen to WW 1 era music on the way to Kansas City, pass around several WW 1 notebooks and I’ll read some letters sent home from the front.

Our motor coach will arrive at the Versailles Library at  6:30 a.m. and leave by 7 a.m.  Stops to pick up can also be made along 50 Highway including Sedalia at the Thompson Hills shopping center at 75 a.m., LaMonte at Casey’s and Warrensburg at the parking lot next to IHop.  Please call with any questions about these pick up stops and any others that may be needed.

Reservations and checks needed by March 4.  $88 per person includes everything described above, including the tip to our driver.
